Description

I would like to thank everyone for the empathy when my Mac finally stopped working. It was interesting, in the comments, that a lot of you are creating top-notch images on some relatively old hardware. I got to thinking about how my "web surfing and typing" Windows laptop might be able to handle rendering after all. So, I tested out DAZ Studio to see how it performed. My heart sank when I rendered the "Fiery Genesis 2" test scene at 600 X 600 pixels and it ended up taking 78 minutes. But then, I realized that there were some decisions about what to include in that scene (lights) that were not the ones I would have made. So, you see me building up a very simple scene here. The goal, of course, is finding the point of diminishing returns and doing your best within those limits. So, I guess I can make the ol' laptop work for now. I don't know, I am severely tempted by the prices of new computers right now... Maybe I'll make do until fall and buy a "Haswell" machine then. Any advice? I would be most curious to see how long it takes YOU to render the "Fiery Genesis 2" test scene on your own machine!!

Well done on the test. I'll have to do that test. I'm recovering from a flu that refused to leave me. I owe you some info... it'll be coming soon... in truth, what you need to know is not hard to figure out. Treat with respect and dignity, and you'll do fine. As for Daz Studio... that's my main machine. Uber2, Hi-quality and 1 or 2 spot lights usually can take care of most scenes and no worries on the time. It wouldn't be fair in truth for me to do the test, my machine is a big girl. 1gb high end graphics card, 16gb ram, and 6 core processor. She's pretty quick. As per above images... looks like your laptop will buy you some time.

On the contrary, I would like to see what the high end computers can do! I won't feel bad. I assume the latest and greatest will be about ten times the speed of what I have to work with presently.

When I first worked with DS I was using a a PIII 450 with 286 megs of ram and a 64 meg video card yeah! my renders took some time but they worked. if you do go for a new computer, consider getting a gaming computer - the graphics and speed are perfect for rendering scene that will be my next computer purchase

Good work! This is what we all need to see - renders of different types, render times, other technical stuff to help us get better renders and learn from each other! Seems we'll all learn from your computer's mess-up. I hope you can get together enough money to get a super good one! :-)

It's always a difficult choice, quality vs. speed. I thin the 28 minutes rendering is a good compromise. Especially if you do what I do and render while doing some other task or reading. Glad to see you are moving forward from your loss though. Here's hoping you get a new fast computer in the not too distant future.
