Greater LA - home to a friend
The Catalina Express is the best way to get to Santa Catalina Island from Long Beach. It is a beautiful one hour ride that only costs $38.00 one way. It is a comfortable ride out there with a snack and mini bar. The weather being almost always pleasant it is great to sit out on the deck at the back of the boat. At night both LA and the island town of Avalon are beautifully lit up. During the day you take in the breathtaking waterway of Los Angeles and if you are lucky you will see porpoises trailing the boat and perhaps even a whale.
This was taken at the Golden Shore docks in Long Beach on the evening of my trip to Santa Catalina Island for a research project. The lighting was gorgeous and the water just so still.

Looks a bit futuristic. Interesting design that. Sounds like fun to take the trip, but then I always like traveling by sea. It feels so alive out on the water.

I really like the golden yellow skyline & the colorful rippled reflections in the water. The boat reminds me of a Bond super villain's yacht, though I can't remember which one. The only time I've seen whales or porpoises up close was on a much smaller boat in turbulent waters with very deep swells on Monterey Bay & I got pretty seasick (despite having taken a dose of dramamine ahead of time), so it was a mixed experience. This looks like it would be much mellower...
