Description

Bill asked what the alligators, in my last posting, have to eat. This area is the Wakodahatchee Wetlands (about 50 acres or 202,344 square meters) and it is a protected area. We do not get to fish in there so there are plenty of fish for the alligators. There are currently about 200 egrets, anhinga (the Florida version of cormorants) and herons nesting in this area also. They average 3 eggs per nest and as the chicks grow, the dominate chick will push his/her siblings out of the nest. So the alligators also eat the chicks since they can not fly yet. I am going to guess that the fish are like Tilapia and are about a foot (30 cm) long. There is a mile long elevated boardwalk that is a great place to walk and the people are about 3 feet (.9144 meters) above the swamp water. There is probably only about 6 t 8 alligators in this area at any one time. A female alligator lays about 80 eggs a year but the males will eat their young. There are also loots of large turtles and iguanas in there to. Lots of food for the top of the food chain! This photo was taken about 3 years ago. Zoom works. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

That's a great photo Dana and the information is fascinating as well! It would be tempting for me to hang around on the boardwalk trying to catch the gators feeding.

Andrea does make me laugh :o) I am still amazed that you live so near to the crocs. My son loves them & would really like to work with them but afraid he cannot afford to volunteer anywhere as he would have to give up work!!!
