Description

When we go salt water fishing, we only have to worry about the pelicans. Even though they are the smallest, of the eight species of pelicans, the Brown Pelican is very aggressive when there is a freshly caught fish around. They are about 48 inches (122 cm) long, weigh about 6 to 12 pounds (2.75 to 5.5 kg) and have a wingspan of 6 to 8 feet (1.83 to 2.4 meters). They have a large bill of about 11 to 13.7 inches (28 to 34.8 cm) and an expandable pouch attached to the bottom of the lower bill. They will eat anything and I once saw a pelican scoop up a pigeon that was walking by. The white head and brown neck indicates a chick feeding adult. Info from my National Geographic Bird Field Guide. An older photo taken with my old Minolta. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great portrait,Dana! I didn't know pelicans can be dangerous. I'm another victim of Disney's idealization of animals!

Nice shot and good information to know. Our Pelicans are not agressive at all. (Hey Dana, regarding your comment on the Boy's Toy, you need to find a new camera store, but if you're going to be falling around those gators, life insurance might be a better buy! LOL)

I love pelicans, they have such a distinctive silhouette! I haven't seen any around here, but I would think there are some nearer the coast. Wonderful shot and information!
