Description

Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum Or: Generosity, Ethics, Patience, Diligence, Renunciation, and Wisdom. Om mani padme hum is the six-syllabled Sanskrit mantra meant to assist in purifying the mind and body. It is usually inscribed on the outside of a prayer wheel. Only six syllables, it embodies the principles of Buddhism. As the wheel spins the words of the prayer fly off into heaven. In a previous post I showed you an older gentleman spinning his hand held wheel, known as a Mani wheel (mani-chos-'khor). The image below is of my personal Mani wheel. The cylinder is made of bone and the insets are coral and turquoise colored glass. If I were a richer man they would be actual stones. When I asked the merchant if they were real he laughed and said, “Not at this price.” You might think that six syllables is not much of a prayer. Buddhists have that covered. Inside the cylinder is a Sutra that will enhance your good karma as the wheel spins.

Beautiful wheel! I think it works like our rosary. As I write in one of your previous posts, I thought that the Mantra Om mani padme hum was a creation of Lobsang Rampa, a writer, I,m glad to know it wasn't.
