Description
Someone asked me if the great Thanka at Jakar was handmade. The answer is yes. The Thanka was hand sown by the local people. Others have commented on the vibrant colors the Bhutanese wear. This is, in part, because they use plant dyes and make their own clothing. We had the opportunity to visit a small factory where we saw indigo being made. The plant matter is boiled to extract the dye. A beautiful result but what a stench!
The Bhutanese are masterful workers in textiles. The image below is an example I brought home with me. For the textile-philes among you I have included close up details, both front and back.
