Description

Strelitzia Reginae, the African Bird of Paradise or Crane Flower originates in South Africa. This evergreen uses moderate to ample water, requires rich, deep soil with much humus and good drainage. It prefers full sun in cool areas or during cool periods, but is best with filtered to open or part shade. It will be damaged at temperatures of 28 F (-2 C) and is often killed when temperatures fall below 20 F (-7 C). [Duffield & Jones - 'Plants for dry Climates']. These evergreens were along the west side of the 'Santa Margarita Ranch House', an adobe style house built circa 1825 that is located on the U.S Marine Base Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego, California.
