Description

This small adobe building was believed to have been built as a winery for the Mission San Louis Rey in 1810 on the Mexican Government Land Grant 'Rancho Santa Margarita Y Las Flores'. It was used as the temporary living quarters of Pio Pico, the last governor of Mexican California while he waited for the Ranch House to be built on the 125,000-acre Rancho Santa Margarita Y Las Flores property. In the 1880s when the O'Neill family owned the property and ran a cattle ranch, the building was used as a blacksmith shop, which it remained until the U.S. Government purchased the land in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for war and the small adobe building became a chapel. In 1993 a flood from the Santa Margarita River damaged the chapel, washed away one of eight stained-glass windows, installed in the early 1940s at a cost of $250 each, and left the others in a pile of mud. Volunteers from the Marines and military families restored the building which is now part of a historic site. This picture was taken on 16 March 2013, Sig...
