Description
The story of the bombing of Oregon is arguably on of my favorite WW 2 stories for a number of reasons. The sheer audacity/bravery on one side, and the disappointing results on the other alone make it memorable.
Warrant Flying Officer Nobuo Fujita, stationed on the IJN submarine I-25, had an idea. He proposed using the Yokosuka E14Y float plane carrried on the large sub as a bomber instead of just a recon plane. He suggested that the float planes could be used to attack the Panama Canal as well as US naval bases along the US Western Continental coast. His commanding officer told him to put it in writing and the ball was sent rolling. The Japanese High Command thought this was a swell idea and sent the I-25 its crew and its forward thinking pilot to the coast of Oregon among other US West Coast areas to put the plan into action. The plan...to ignite a large forest fire to engulf the forests in Oregon, create a panic in the US, and to divert men and material on the West Coast to fighting the resultant enormous fire.
So, at 0535 in the predawn light of 9 September 1942, as a "we'll show you" counter to Jimmy Doolittle's Tokyo raid, CFO Fujita's Yokosuka E14Y "Glen" floatplane, carrying two 170 pound thermite incendiary bombs was launched from the forward catapult of the I-25 B-1 type submarine towards Oregon, the continental US of A.

" run BooBoo!!, that's no ordinary pic-a-nic basket....." Stunning image Bill, great pov and superb detail in the mostly monochromatic coloring. The addition of the figures, ( so often absent from such images..) really adds an extra dynamic to the scene. A new slice of history for me.....but the sort of lesson I love!. I eagerly await the next installment... 10/10 and BIG thumbs up....

Excellent and suitably gloomy image Bill of this event. Fortunatly for the US this idea wasn't really a success. Nobuo Fujita's life story is an interesting read.

Excellent!!

Awesome render of the Glen's 15 minutes and more of fame. That was before "Climate Change" of course, these days it maybe wouldn't turn out quite so good for the US.
