Description
"One hundred and four!!", declared Tailspin, replacing his boots. Neiwil snapped his fingers and said " The 'Firkin 104', F-104 for short ". " Coool, I like it ", said Tailspin. Neiwil looked at the lengthening shadows and said, " It'll be dark soon, we'll get an early night and on the way in tomorrow I'll pick up a pilot..". Bright and early the next morning Neiwil arrived with a somewhat reluctant candidate for the historic flight. After a brief struggle, the porcine pilot was strapped in, Tailspin washed his hands in a bucket of water, complaining " I should have known I'd get 'that !' pipe to fit..". Closing the canopy, Neiwil went to the rear of the F-104 and lit the ' igniter ' saying, " It'll take about five minutes to build up pressure, we'd better move back a bit..". After several 'a bit more's' they heard a 'pop', followed a moment later by another. Neiwil called out, " Good luck Porky !"... Porky didn't hear, he was too busy trying to gnaw through his restraining harness. There was a louder 'POP' and a blue / green lick of flame spouted from the rear of the F-104. The wooden marvel began to roll forward, as the air from the induction tube began to mix with the gas, the flame grew and began to glow bright, like the sun. With a roar, like the Devil's own trouser trump, the F-104 shot across the cart park, accelerating like nothing had ever done before. The nose wheel began to leave the ground, rising skywards, one of the main wheels hit a pothole, the F-104 leaped into the air, climbing faster and beginning to roll to starboard. Neiwil was amazed and dismayed, even above the roar of the F-104, he could hear Porky squealing in terror!!!. Then he realised it was Tailspin, jumping up and down next to him, yelling " Weeeeeeeeeeee!!!". As the F-104 became completely inverted, it's climb for the sky became a dive to disaster. Just missing the market, it disappeared from view over the tree line, with a thunderous boom, the very ground shook and a great pillar of flame rose into the sky. The F-104 was obliterated, carried away as a cloud of ash. Neiwil and Tailspin stood in silence until Tailspin said, " well, it went quite well.....till it took off!". With a dull 'thud' a smoking, medium rare pork loin landed at their feet, Tailspin picked it up, tossing the hot meat from hand to hand, he reverently brushed some blades of grass from the golden crisp skin. Neiwil was overcome, burying his face in his hands he sobbed, "Ohh Porky what have I done!! ?". There was a 'crunch' and a 'slurp' and Tailspin, through a mouthfull of hot pork said "Mmmmmm, delicious!...well, even if the firkin thing doesn't work, you've invented the 30 second Barbecue !". Neiwil turned on his heels and walked back to the workshop. When Tailspin entered several minutes later, licking pork grease from his fingers, Neiwil was going through the stack of parchments and blueprints. Tailspin sat and listened as Neiwil gave an occasional mutter..." why?.........should have worked!..........wasn't THAT complicated.......why didn't he recover the spin?.........why didn't he pull up?". In a Machiavellian twist, it was Tailspin who saw the logical answer, he approached Neiwil and, in a measured tone, said " It was a bloody pig!!!, and I dont think it actually wanted to fly!!!, now if I was the pig, things would have been different, but....". Apparantly Neiwil wasn't listening, there was something attached to the back of one of the parchments that he'd not noticed before...it was a business card. Neiwil read it silently to himself, 'WHEN TECHNOLOGY FAILS, MAGIC PREVAILS....RUNSIMAN T RUNESTONE.....MAGICIAN GRADE 1....PLOT 47b, Couchbutt Sanscomfort Dell, ENGLAND. Neiwil tapped the card on his desk and asked "What did you just say?" Tailspin repeated " I don't think it actua...." Neiwil cut in " Nooooooo!............. after that ?".......
