Description
Known since ancient times, the area by the thermal water springs of Lagole represents an important archaeological site in the province of Belluno, Veneto. Near these healing waters many Venetic artefacts (2500 B.C.) have been found in addition to some Roman findings ( such as small bronze statues, inscriptions, etc.). This water spring was associated with a healing deity that during Roman times was identified as Apollo. The sanctuary was probably connected with other Venetic centers of the Padana plain. The findings of Lagole are now kept in the Museum of the Magnificent Community in Pieve di Cadore (the official name of the town).
This is the first of a series about this terrific area, an open sanctuary with no traces of buildings, where a mysterious deity was worshipped, Here you can see the brook, with its yellowish-reddish water, on a mountain slope.
Thanks for your kind comments.

Fascinating history and wonderful image. Interesting that nothing has ever been built on the site. Your comments made me think of a 1965 novel by James Michener, The Source. It is the story of an archeological dig and what is found. Each chapter tells the story of a different time in history. Sometimes what is not found is as important as what is found.
