Description

Spotted a pair of Red Bellied Woodpeckers trying to break into a special bat box. The top half of the collage shows one of the woodpeckers chopping a hole in the bat version of a birdhouse. Then they found that the bottom was open but were afraid to go in. I assume that there were bats sleeping in there. Photo taken in April 2007. They actually do not have red bellies! Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

How very interesting! Perhaps they smelled what they thought were beetles and had a shock!

Wonderful shots! I'd love to see this behaviour. I hear them up in my trees, but they're so far up seeing them is rare (our trees are in the 150-200 ft. range!)

I wonder how it got it's name after all its not difficult to tell it's head from its belly. Its very similar to the woodpeckers that visit my bird feeders they love peanuts but are so skittish that I never get close enough to get a good photo.

Wouldn't make the bats around here a home, they come and eat all the ripe fruit...little buggers ! So, seeing these guys having a bit of fun bugging the bats, I say go for it Red Dudes ! ~Cheers~

Oh, I never have seen a bat-box, didn't know that they exist, Dana. What a cute story about this beautiful birds, which here (in Holland) are very shy, I love that light red color on the heads. Good you could catch them this way, my friend.
