Hi everybody,
My name is Dana Pommet and my wife’s name is Josephine. I was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1942, and except for a tour in the Navy, lived there for most of my life. I retired to Delray Beach, Florida in December 2000. We love to travel and photography goes hand and hand with that. I went digital about 5 years ago and started posting November 22, 2008. I have met so many wonderful people on RR and that makes this whole process so much more interesting than just posting photos. Thanks for all the comments and keep them coming.
Update  January 2012: After hiding and denying my mild Dyslexia, for most of my professional life, and now fighting with its advancement – I want to thank you all for putting up with my poor typing skills and spelling problems. I know that my spell checker hates me and I now depend completely on audio books rather then actually reading printed books.  Life marches on!  ÂÂ

How very interesting! Perhaps they smelled what they thought were beetles and had a shock!

Lovely shots Dana. They are similar to our 'great spotted woodpeckers'.

Wonderful shots! I'd love to see this behaviour. I hear them up in my trees, but they're so far up seeing them is rare (our trees are in the 150-200 ft. range!)

I wonder how it got it's name after all its not difficult to tell it's head from its belly. Its very similar to the woodpeckers that visit my bird feeders they love peanuts but are so skittish that I never get close enough to get a good photo.

Wouldn't make the bats around here a home, they come and eat all the ripe fruit...little buggers ! So, seeing these guys having a bit of fun bugging the bats, I say go for it Red Dudes ! ~Cheers~

Oh, I never have seen a bat-box, didn't know that they exist, Dana. What a cute story about this beautiful birds, which here (in Holland) are very shy, I love that light red color on the heads. Good you could catch them this way, my friend.
