Description
"The Stropharia cubensis mushroom is a memory bank of galactic history. Alien, but full of promise, it throws open a potential for understanding that will sweep away the petty concerns of earth and history-bound humanity." - Terence McKenna
Terence McKenna was a biologist & psychedelic philosopher who believed mushrooms have had a pivotal role in human evolution & may have originated somewhere other than earth. While I'm very skeptical of this theory, when I saw this colony of mushrooms arranged in an intriguing pattern on a tree trunk, I felt that it looked like some kind of strange, alien code that was just beyond my ability to decipher. So I present it as a simple photograph for it's aesthetic qualities, while still hoping that perhaps someone can decode it & reveal it's secret message.
One more photo in this series tomorrow & that one will actually be a view of the river itself...

it would seem that trees could have some defense against parasitic growths outstanding capture

Your love of HDR is never ending lol! You mean there is a fungus among us?
brewgirlca
Your HDR really brought out the hyper-amazing texture and intensity of color. And yet the structures blend so nicely into the bark you would almost think they were part of the tree itself. Kind of like a mega-lichen.

Some good looking fungi there! I am a big fan of Terence since the 70's.

How lovely this find is! Makes me think of the harmoniums in "Sirens of Titan"...

Great presentation – it looks like more than the mushroom is using the tree as a host!

This particular mushroom species does create an interesting pattern on the bark!
