Description
Volume II - Episode 2
Where: Cologne, Germany
When: 1 month and 5 days after E-Day, 1:02 am
Rob's torch light swept the car park. Only one car was visible through the fog - a 5-door minivan with its rear-end facing them. The van's rear hatch was open.
They knew Krystal would be in a wheelchair, Klaudia realised. They parked like that so they could throw her in the back and get moving.
"Stay here," Rob whispered. He tip-toed to the front of the van for a better look at their surroundings. Even though he was just a few metres ahead of her, Klaudia could barely see him through the strange blue fog. Cathy stood at the edge of the doorway, her wand raised for battle.
"What's that fog?" Klaudia asked.
"I don't know," Cathy said. "I've never seen anything like it before." She fought to keep her voice steady, but her eyes betrayed her terror.
"But is it...?"
"It's a spell."
"But not yours? You didn't cast it?"
Cathy shook her head and continued peering into the darkness, looking nervous.
Rob appeared at the doorway, back from his search. "I can't see a thing," he whispered. "I think we just gotta go for it."
"Rob..." Cathy began.
"If they were here, they would've taken the van. It's only about twenty yards to the exit. When we hit the street, we'll just floor it and get away from here as fast as we can."
"Rob, I don't like this."
"Neither do I," Rob said, kissing her forehead. "But we can't stay here."
Cathy reached out with her fingers, running them through the eerie blue fog, almost as if she were trying to touch it. Interact with it. "I really don't like this," she said again. "If it's witchcraft, it means they have a witch."
"But why would a witch be working with them?"
"I don't know, Rob. But if they have a witch, that's a whole new ballgame."
Rob looked at his wife, then looked out at the fog again. It seemed to press in around them, sensing their fear. A strange, musty smell lurked in the air, barely perceptible at first, but growing in strength until it burned their nostrils. Rob wiped his nose with the back of his hand and turned to Klaudia, still careful to avoid looking at her naked body. "Are you old enough to drive?" he asked.
"I'm 21."
"Can you drive fast?"
"I'm German."
He tossed her the keys to the van. "Take the wheel. I'll get in the back so I can shoot from both sides. Cathy, ride up front."
The Americans said a brief, silent prayer, and then they crept out into the car park.
Klaudia followed them. As her hand touched the driver's side door, a haunting metallic screech rang out, echoing endlessly through the streets outside. She looked at Cathy, confused, and saw the Americans exchange a startled glance.
The screech turned into a whining rumble.
The sound grew steadily louder.
Steadily closer.
"What..." Klaudia began, but the words caught in her throat.
Cathy's face was frozen in terror. "Tank!" she screamed. "It's a tank!"
