Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. Monument dedicated to Canova.
The monument in Carrara marble is one of most typical Neo-classic artworks. It was erected by the disciples based on the design prepared by Canova in 1794 for Titian.
Above three steps an admirable pyramid rises with an open door which leads to the symbolic burial chamber. In front of the open door there are figures of women which portray the WEEPING SCULPTURE, the PAINTING and the ARCHITECTURE, followed by three genii with lit torches (art will never die!). On the left, at the base of the pyramid, the genius of Antonio Canova with his unlit torch, and desperate lion (Venice). Above the door there are two angels who bear the effigy of the sculptor surrounded by a snake, symbol of immortality.
On the base of the monument is the following Latin inscription:
ANTONIO CANOVAE PRINCIPI SCULPTORUM AETATIS SUAE
COLLEGIUM VENETUM BONIS ARTIBUS EXCOLEND. SODALJ MAXIMO
EX CONLATIONE EUROPAE UNIVERSAI: AN. MDCCCXXVII.

What an amazing image! I love all of the details and the almost heavy Old World feeling; it's not oppressively heavy, but it has weight and presence. I love the composition of this shot. The statues and effigies are amazingly detailed. This is well seen and presented. I like it immensely.
