Description
Venice, The Frari’s Basilica. Funeral Monument dedicated to Jacopo Pesaro, by Lombardo Workshop (1424). Jacopo Pesaro was General of the galleys of Pope Alexander VI, ally to Venice against the Turks.
The monument was built in 1524 while Jacopo was still alive. In between the columns in Lombardesque style, which support the architrave beneath the attic, the figure of the Bishop lies on top of the urn. The Bishop is lying on his right side and support his head with his right hand while gazing into the sky. At the foot of the urn, two putti with unlit torches rest one of their feet on a skull while holding the mitre near the family coat of arms.
The entire monument is supported by a large corbel with an inscription bearing the eulogy according to which, when at war, Jacopo succeeded in conquering his enemies, when at peace, he succeeded in conquering himself.
