Description

I think I enjoyed Zion more than any of the parks we've seen here in Utah. Arches is amazing with its erosion-carved arches and mesas. Canyonlands is vast and beautiful, and I liked the feeling of intimacy there in contrast to the Grand Canyon. Capitol Reef shows off so many geological layers that I spent all my time there naming what I was seeing, becoming familiar with the strata ... it was a wonderful stop. Escalante blows your mind ... driving along the top of a ridge in a motorhome is not for the faint of heart. (Bill did a great job, but had to look at my on-the-road photos later to see what it really looked like, since he had his eyes on the road!) Bryce is unique in all the world, with its hoodoo cliffs, erosion slowly wearing away a vast plateau. At 8,000 feet, though, I must admit it was hard to enjoy the scenery. The air is far too thin for my sea-level-acclimated body to handle. There's something about Zion, though. The canyon is deep, and it feels like the safest place in the world. Carved by the Virgin River, lined with cottonwood trees, filled with wildlife ... it's absolutely gorgeous. If I had to choose one of the parks to spend a week in, it would be Zion. (The canyon has the advantage of being at about 4,000 feet, which is SO much easier than 8,000!) Bryce looks fussy to me. Too much detail. Zion has wide, sweeping surfaces where color and texture and shape are what you notice. We're leaving Utah today, and will spend a couple of days in Arizona and then on to Colorado and Kansas.

Wonderful capture of this magnificent rock. There is a sense of anticipation as you approach through the trees. Once you get a full view its easy to be awestruck.

The shapes, as you've framed them here, are lovely; but it's that palette of colours that speaks to me here, light on the top with the rich greens and russets shading down darker at the bottom--something about it just feels RIGHT, if you know what I mean. Fantastic shot, as I have come to expect from you!

MAN! This is just off the scale - what a spectacular capture, Tara! Wow, you two are getting to see some wonderful places! If you want a real spine-tingling ride, take that motorhome through the Sawtooth range in Idaho.... We took that route in my dad's buick when I was a kid - scared hell out of all of us..
