Description

A brief rest from TREK'ing, ( it's not as easy as you'd think....but more to follow).. About 2 years ago I posted a couple of renders to show some Tuskegee skins I did for my P-51 B. I had every intention of putting them up but they went 'South' with a lot of other stuff in a nasty computer crash. The skins with the model were never that good nor were the Tuskegee ones. This was due to my not being entirely happy with the model and intending to do it over. The Tuskegee Airman is one of my favourite aviation subjects and I couldn't resist starting some new skins, 'proper' ones this time. These are the P-51B's of the 100th FS, 322nd FG, based at Ramitelli Airfield on the Adriatic Coast. Along with their sister squadrons 99th, 301st, and 302nd FS, they escorted bombers of the 15th Airforce on heavy strategic bombing raids to Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Poland and Germany. Not a single bomber was lost to enemy aircraft on any of these raids, leading bomber crews to dub the Tuskegee pilots 'The Red Tailed Angels'. There are recorded instances of German fighter formations closing on American bomber streams but upon sighting the Red Tails, turning away rather than joining combat....respect. A HUGE thank you to Bill (Steelrazer) who kindly provided the background for this. Pilot Apollo Max, kitted out by adh3d

Excellent job, Neil! Great composition and I especially like the muted overall color tone. The close up P-51 works as the focal point. Very nicely done.

Really looks good at the zoom Neil. And to think that there were people in the Army Air Corps who didn't think these men could fly airplanes let alone fight them effectively. The Red Tails had something to prove and did so magnificently.

Good work mate. I've seen the 1995 film with Laurence Fishburne but not the 2012 film RedTails. Like you say, huge respect for those guys.
