Description
I always liked the P-40, and I suppose that it had not a little to do with seeing the movie "Flying Tigers" with John Wayne when I was a kid. Just a little tidbit. I always wondered why some pictures of the aircraft called it the Warhawk, others the Tomahawk, and still others the Kittyhawk. I did a bit of reading and apparently the Warhawk was the official US moniker for the bird, Tomahawk was the name for the Soviet versions B and C models, and Kittyhawk the D variants.
Though limited in range, which hastened the transition to the P-38's as the Japanese were pushed further back, pilots didn't consider the Hawk an inferior plane...it did have it's strengths in a fight and the pilots knew how to use them to their advantage. Not the least of these was its superior speed to the Japanese fighters they tangled with. It did give them a bit of control in the fight because it enabled them to leave any time they wanted without fear of any successful pursuit!
Just a simple render to use Neil's terrific "Kittyhawk" with the Flying Tiger livery. I like the muted colors in this and the lead plane just "works" for me...just like the old movie.

Way to go Bill!... love this. "The Flying Tigers" is still one to watch when it comes around, also "The Flying Leathernecks" another fav and intended project for The Plant's 'Naval Aviation Department'... Thanks for the mention(s), always appreciated mate...

Excellent. The P-40 was always a favorite of mine. It just looks fantastic. You have to wonder how it would have performed if it had been given the turbocharge merlin rather than the normally aspirated allison.

Very cool.

You really given the texture some more zing there I think... and I like the open cockpits, gives it a real "back-blocks" of China feel. Great render!

Excellent !!

If you say that the render is simple, the result is fantastic as always. I like the composition. Excellent render and excellent model.

A Great Movie, and another great piece of art - work ... Jim Gordon: ...I also can't have grand-standers trying to hog the whole show! Results around here are based on co-operation and understanding. Discipline in the air is strict, because that's the only way an outfit like this can operate! Woody Jason: ...And here I thought it was every man for himself. Jim Gordon: Not these days, it isn't. Just wait until the day you look over your shoulder and see a Jap sittin' on your tail, in a ship that you can't out-maneuver! THEN you'll know what I'm talking about.
