Description
This poem is about people trying too hard to be individuals. I hate the metaphor that everyone wears a mask in public to hide who they really are, because there are two sides to that. Some people interpret that metaphor to mean "don't act normal" and conclude that "be yourself" just means "be different."
Some people wear them to fit in and others make their masks bright and noticeable to stand out but we are all conformists in our own ways.

We all wear our masks.
A socially acceptable facade
mass-manufactured by
the love of who we
should be
Our mask is malleable
forming to the will of
the clique, as unique
as deceptive
Normalcy is a melting pot
of performance art and
practiced indignation; of
consented rebellion
Individuality is the perception
to which the mask is slave

If you don't like reading the prologue then don't read it. Poetry is a very personal art form (for me anyway) and I feel like everyone needs some kind of description to get an idea of what my poetry means. Some are much easier to understand than others, but I feel like if you can get all the meaning out of a poem just by reading it, I haven't done my job. It should always mean more than what you see on the surface, and that's why I almost always write something before sharing my poems.
