Description
Among the Luftwaffe's many strange birds....this one actually worked. The Dornier 335 was a Heavy Fighter / Ground Attack aircraft. Despite it's size and weight, it's twin 'in line' engines gave it quite a performance. It could hold it's own against the P-38 which was no mean fete. With both engines running on boost, the Do 335 could sustain 474 mph at 21,000 feet. Even with one engine 'out' it could manage 426 mph. The first reported combat encounter was reported by French Ace Pierre Clostermanne in April 1945. Clostermanne was leading a flight of 4 Hawker Tempest of No3 squadron RAF, they sighted a Do 335 flying at tree top height and moved to attack. The German pilot spotted them, turned around and flew off. Despite the Tempests considerable low level speed, the RAF fighters were unable to get close enough to even try a shot.
The Do 335 had a number of interesting features, it was one of the first aircraft fitted with a rocket powered ejector seat. When the ejector seat was activated, the vertical tail fin and rear propeller were jettisoned by explosive charges, to prevent pilot 'collision'. The lower vertical tail fin could also be jettisoned independently in the event of a wheels up landing. Initial armament was 3 x 30mm cannons, one firing through the prop hub and 2 wing mounted, outside the propeller arc. Later models had provision for wing mounted bombs or machine gun packs, the Do 335 also had an internal bomb bay. Yet again it was too little too late, but many historians agree, this one could have made a difference, given another 6 months of war.....

This is another one of those 'it's fortunate it wasn't in production earlier' type aircraft. Stunning model mate and love the decals on the table.... takes me back to my model building days :) Kubelwagen looks great too.

Very cool. The Germans were all over the map on inventing different tanks and planes.

I really like the way you do these "presentations", Neil. The details are great and I especially like the inclusion of the decal sheet...a really nice touch with a subtle humor.

Steelrazor almost said it all. Great job with the photo montage. The jeep adds a lot both as to scale and nice scene, not to forget the little tent. Also, great job with the technical and historical description. It sure refreshed my memory! Great job and keep up the good work! That's one arrow I wouldn't like dodging! :-)

Indeed mate, if history had been a little different, time been stretched.. We could have been in so much trouble! But.....too little, far too late! The 'Owl' being another, by far the finest Night Fight of the war! Can't wait mate! Rob

Huh? Didn't ever realize how formidable this aircraft was! Glad it was so late in coming into play. Will have more respect for this one now.
