Description
A fleeting visit to Liverpool by Queen Mary 2 today. She arrived at 03:30 from Ireland and sailed on the high tide at 17:00. Although a scheduled stop over this was also a precursor to next weeks BOA70 celebrations. A number of events are planned to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. Admiral of the Fleet, Rear Admiral Hockley has said "Liverpool is absolutely the right place to hold these commemorations – the city was fundamental to the success of the battle,it received over 1,000 convoys, looked after ships’ crews, the ships themselves, carried out repairs, built ships – and was the headquarters of the battle.” Events in Liverpool take place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (May 24-28), where up to 25 Royal Navy and international warships will gather. The main day of commemoration will be Sunday May 26, with a Cathedral service, a march through the city by current Naval and Merchant naval personnel as well as veterans, and a flypast from a Royal Navy Historic Flight Fairey Swordfish – one of the aircraft which was the mainstay in the struggle against the U-boat.
“We have a great maritime tradition and this final commemoration will be a memorable and moving event which will honour those who took part in the longest campaign of World War 2,”
The warships are due to arrive Thursday and I'm in work, on a 14hr tech shift :-) I've never been happier...and it means I'm off on Saturday and Sunday !! should be a great weekend.....watch this space.

Oh, wow, the QE 2! Very nice photo (from your work place?). You say the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic? The war wasn't over until 1945, so I'm wondering why they have chosen 2013 as the year to celebrate? Or is it the turning point of the B o A they are celebrating? Either way, it's well worth celebrating and REMEMBERING the dreadful plights of all too many, many who suffered horrible deaths at sea (drowning, freezing, burned, torn appart in explosions - war at sea was cruel). Read Capt. Nickolas Monserrat's autobiography "The Cruel Sea" to get the real picture. It gave me nightmares. Hope you get some beautiful photos and excellent weather so you can take them! Thanks for this post. Am looking foreward to more! Keep up the good work! :-)

cool shot

Impressive just by sheer size. It always manages to make the buildings in the background look tiny. Great capture Neil :)

Great capture. I did see that ship when it was in Portland, Maine a few years ago and at that time it was the largest.

Sweet shot.

I trust you are going to be there to photograph our entire navy (two ships) and 23 International ships... Note : not impressed with state of affairs lol But this is a MOST impressive ship to be sure, shame its registered abroad and built aboard as well.... Not in Britain... By the way, great backdrop as well dude! Rob

She's never made it as far as Lake Michigan, but considering her size, all of that displacement would render Chicago back into the swamp from which it came, so I guess a ship like this not entering the Great Lakes is a good thing. This is a great shot. I love big vehicles, especially ships. Marvelous work.
