Description

Smile! Thinking neutral thoughts Perhaps simply relaxing Minding my own business Someone wanders by Looks at me Says, Smile! How annoying I wasn't thinking about anything That would cause me to sit here And grin like an idiot Smile! The truth is I smile a lot Generally happy Pleasant People tend to like me But if I'm not smiling What business is it of theirs? If you want me to smile Sit down with me Talk to me Find out who I am Make a connection Say something funny Random strangers With instructions For the proper arrangement Of my facial muscles Would cause me to smile more If they would Just Go Away .......... The Writer's Gallery Challenge Topic for May is SMILE It's been a lot more challenging than you might think! There will be more later ...

Hilarious! I usually ask my random men blokes and lasses to do something that befits their general beingness. But sometimes I say "Say sex"

Well done, Tara. I particularly like the last part. I found it to be the same in the corporate world. The smiling ones, the glad handers, always seemed to get ahead. I even wrote a little piece to the tune of Nate King Cole's 'Smile'. Smile though your face is breaking Smile though your teeth are aching You can go far You can be a rising star If you ever expect to make it Hide your feelings Smile And fake it You’ll find You’ll always Be in style If you just smile

In Germany it is said: You reap what you sow. If I open a human friendly begegene, he will also be friendly to me. Are there so many people who are just for a smile waiting. Gentle and fine poem! SMILE

You'd like Oleg. He's too young to be as intense as he is, and now he's got one of those Slavic patriarch beards (quite a feat since it's getting bigger than he is!) Anyway, the whole "smile" thing leaves him vaguely discombobulated, since he notices that Americans smile with such regularity that he often mistrusts what he sees when emotional displays come up. Funny how that works. I've also noticed that compulsory smiling tends to produce wide-eyed leering expressions rather than genuine smiles, but then one doesn't turn genuine emotion on and off, unless one happens to be a particular Star Trek-derived android. I loved this bit of writing. It's so spot on. So true, and it reminds me, also, of one of my favorite haikus. In Japanese it fits the haiku pattern, but in English it translates as: "Mosquito at my ear Do you think I am deaf?" For some reason, your humdinger of a closing stanza made me think of that. This is great. Really top-notch stuff!

I love this! I have been in this situation lots of times. I get "Earth to Lucinda" a bit too. I wonder what they would say if you WERE sitting there grinning like an idiot. They'd probably walk away quickly. I love the last three stanzas. I'm just about to pack my laptop into a carry on and head for the airport! I so wish you weren't on the road too, but next time!

LOL – yeah I'm with you on that one, Tara.... My response would probably be something along the lines of "bite me" – I'll smile when I feel like smiling! But this is very cool and it did make me smile! :-)
