Description

Inside Memory Hall at the National World War I Museum (the Liberty Memorial) in Kansas City are six bronze bowls on tall pedestals. To my eye, they're the dominant objects in the room. Some might argue that the maps, or the murals, or the displays are what's most important, but honestly, I've got very little idea of what's inside the building except these huge bronze things. They're Art Nouveau in their feeling, which makes sense for a building completed in the 1920s. Simple, elegant ... they absolutely glow in the low light. I found loads of references on line to Memory Hall and to its contents. Every photograph of the place includes at least one of these bowls. However, nobody mentions them. It's like they don't exist. It would make sense if they were the sort of thing to hold a flame ... the memorial has a sort of "eternal flame" theme ... but you'd think if that were the case, one of the many websites dedicated to the museum would mention it. It's a mini-mystery. If you know, please feel free to jump in!

I've no idea, however, you have done a wonderful job of presenting them to us. Wonderful POV just adds to the mystery of these bowls

It's cool the way you see stuff that others would pass up.

Gorgeous and mysterious. I have no idea what those bowls might contain, but maybe that's the point; they probably contain ideas, and ideals. Invisible things that may not rest in the bowls at all, but simply hover just above them. Well, that's my thought. This is quite incredibly gorgeous in every single way. I love the glow you've captured here. This is such a sensual photograph.

Of course you have made them dominant in your excellent photo but I cannot tell how big they are or how they are situated with respect to the other things on display. Possibly some lighting scheme in the bowls? Possibly an eternal flame set from the past brought inside to preserve them? Funny they would say nothing about them. I expect you to solve this very soon or post another shot showing the entire situation to continue the mystery!

Maybe these bowls symbolize the mystery which is an essential part of such memorials, holding all the unanswered questions...

Well now you've got me curious, Tara.... I don't recall seeing these last time I was there – but that was a few years ago.. It was the last time my dad and I went out to take photos together before his health started going downhill... I'll have to go through some of those photos and see if I see these; or better yet just go back to that Museum again and find them. A wonderful photo, my friend! I love the golden tones of the light!

Love the warm glow of the light & it's reflection on the bronze - this is a beautiful image. No idea about the bowls - you should call or write the museum & ask them...

Couldn't find a single reference. Impressive image. It looks imperial to me, perhaps symbolic of America's newborn empire.

whatever, it's very symbolic, since any vessel is designed to contain something, even facts.
