Anything that works as a floral arrangement AND a salad works in my book. I happen to love the language of flowers, despite the fact that I feel that Victorian-era emotional repression was one of Humanity's absolute-worse ideas; but the Victorian Era was so strange, all of that repression (and those corsets, dear gods!) made for some rather interesting erotica (Victorian era pornography is some of the weirdest stuff around!) None of that has anything to do with this image, but my mind goes off in such odd directions at times. Well...okay...most times! I especially love the pea pods and the peas as the vase itself. There's a wonderful melding of shapes and functions, and--as I've come to expect from your work--the colors are fantastic and magical. This is really quite gorgeous. I love the bottom portions of the vase itself, it's like something a bit more animal than vegetable, or maybe Nature's display of Art Nouveau tendencies. I find that quite appealing!

I love when you do highly packed plant paintings---ie, with lots of different flowers and leaves packed together, as they are here---because the painting becomes a compendium of different shapes, textures and lives, and it gets a giddy street-dance feeling to it. Having said that, this also has an old keepsake feeling---like those days when flowers spoke for love (when love couldn't be spoken very often, ala your description above). It's in the vase, and in the flowers strewn at the bottom: A sense of memorabilia and keepsakes of the heart. Also, really fine paint-work on the vase---you don't go for an exact, shiny set of glass 'legs', but rather a set of pods and stems with all their imperfections, riding up the vase. (A peapod pedestal.) Your highlights in those pods, btw, are wonderful. Then, the pod-lines move into a kind of flame-like bunch-of-snakes; and the vase proper is like flames in a low, purple fireplace. Beautiful conception. Whoosh. But then---ba-da-boom! Flowers and leaves and pods all jump into the piece, and they're painted as a huge gathering of dancing beings, all crossing over each other, grabbing each other, playing, and cajoling and falling over each other...And the detail is wonderful---nothing is slacked-over here, no "bokeh," no blur to pass over the 'little parts'...it's a cacophony of very distinct little beings, distinctly articulated, all messing around in a beehive of activity. Wonderful! (Disciplined work.) And---no surprise---your background is filled with echoes and resonations of the bouquet---real perhaps, but also spirit. And whoa, some of those color-morphs on top---the pinks to blues to purples---are terrific. What can I say? A cornucopia of a piece. And a big teeming feast for the eyes. Voila. Corny to say it, but peas never had it so freakin' good...
