Description

Early morning...an A6M2-N fighter floatplane leaves the relative safety of it's sheltered cove base for a recon mission. I've always wondered why the Japanese seemed to have such a fondness for floatplanes. Other than that of being an island nation, apparently they were following the tactics of Great Britain during the First World War in that respect. The only problem with that is that you wind up just a step behind your role model. The British realized after their tactical love affair with the foatplane that aircraft unencumbered with stationary outrigger floats could accommodate speed in excess of 100 mph faster than their sea going cousins. There was however the advantage that floatplanes didn't require a runway, so bases were less easily detected from passing enemy patrols. At any rate, landing and taking off on the water fascinates me as a concept....hence this render. A6M2-N Floatplane: T2FF by motakamishii here at Rendo...absolutely a gem of a model and craftsmanship. Pilot: G2 Male Koji and IJN flight gear by kobamax. Warehouse, barracks, and watchtowers by Soisai A6M2-N "Rufe": Free by Neiwil on sharecg. Coupla Japanese maintenance boats from out there somewhere. Poser7, Vue6Infinite, PS Cs3

Very nice job on the lighting and the wakes. My research for a novel I'm writing about this period suggests that the high-ups in the Japanese military were a bit rigid in their tactical thinking - not unlike the French and British generals of World War 1, who continued sending young men into slaughter because they were incapable of coming up with any other strategy. That said, the Pacific War was primarily fought among far-flung islands - and while the IJN had superior carriers, they didn't have enough of them - and unlike the Americans, who could always build another one, once the Japanese lost a vessel, there was no good way to replace it. Betcha never expected a girl to know about this stuff, huh? ;)

(Well, when the "grand strategy" is one of attrition; we lose 3, they lose 2; we win.... BTW: luv the moniker Mlle. Deau.) Congrats, Sir, on a very nice render. I have to admit I've wondered about the same thing myself and concluded that it gives more opportunity for recovery after a scouting mission. Any BB, CL, or seaplane carrier can scoop up the unit and pilot.

There were plus and minuses, as you have said.. You could hide away a dozen of these on some island in the middle of nowhere and they could attack unwary ships.. And it would take the diversion of a Carrier to deal with this threat.. But, speed was their handicap.. Range not so much.. Great render as always mate.. Rob

These units moved around so much that pitching tents amongst the coconuts was common too... ouch! Better that than ordnance I suppose. What else can I say? Floatplanes! ;-) Sets the early morning scene really well and great wake. I agree about the workmanship on the T2FF, its a terrific model, as are the carrier/dry land A6M2 and A6M3 versions.
