Description

During the night the Polish Guided Missile Frigate "Generał Tadeusz Kościuszko" (Pendant 273) arrived. Formerly the USS Wadsworth (FFG-9), she is one of two Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigates in the Polish Navy. She is named for Tadeusz Kościuszko, an American Revolutionary War hero and hero of Poland's struggle for independence. ORP Kościuszko is homeported in Gdynia Oksywie, and has participated in numerous NATO exercises in the Baltic Sea. She tied up alongside the HMCS Iroquois (DDG 280) an Iroquois-class destroyer that has served the Canadian Forces since 1972. Iroquois is the lead ship of her class which is sometimes referred to as the Tribal-class or simply as the 280-class. She is the second vessel to use the designation HMCS Iroquois. She carries the hull classification symbol 280. She is assigned to Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) and is homeported at CFB Halifax. This WAS fun!! the River Mersey was doing her best 'Atlantic' impression and the ferry was bobbing like a cork. The swell was so bad that the Isle of Man Seacat didn't sail. The tugboat alongside the Kościuszko was acting as a buffer, to stop her rolling too much and damaging herself or the Iroquois. The result was a rather nasty rubber smear down her side, I'm sure it will wash off..... My plan worked (for a change), while local radio was reporting 3 hour cues to get on warships in Liverpool, I only had to wait 15 minutes to get aboard the Edinburgh. A bonus with this was access to Cammell Lairds shipyard and no camera restrictions. As you'll see soon, Edinburgh was not the only 'goodie' on display.....

I recognized the Perry class frigate at a glance but couldn't make it out why it was in Liverpool, until I read that it had been sold to Poland! SHows how behind I am in keeping up with things. The name is very fitting, as the ship is from the USA and the hero was Polish. These photos are great! Keep 'em comin'! As for the Mersey "Atlantic Swell", it's not visible in the photos so I'll have to take your word for it. As for the rubber streak, well, it will wash off with the paint, yes, but otherwise tough to get off or paint over. Looking foreward to more. My, lucky you that the weather cooperated! :-)
