My corporeal form lives with my wonderful wife and six eccentric cats in beautiful Sedgefield, but my dreaming body is frequently elsewhere, exploring the fractal universe and marveling at nature's chaos. I love traveling to places that exist only as mathematical constructs on my computer and bringing back snapshots that sometimes remind me of the real world (whatever that means), sometimes of metamagical worlds we can visit only in our imaginations. I trained as a biologist and run a small company specialising in science publishing - writing, editing, illustrating and typesetting. For 3D world building I use Vue, Daz Studio and Poser, but I've also used Bryce since version 2 and done some work with Terragen, Carrara and Groboto. For technical illustration I use mainly Illustrator and Photoshop.

Cool creature...sounds like my kind of project! I know what you mean about getting caught "playing" with the "fun" programs...my wife always bugs me about playing with my dolls when I am working on an image with V3 in it!

Not knowing the actual character or the novel, I'm left with just this image, and it definitely feels like it comes from an already formed world, with its own connections, backstories, etc. It looks like it's in some kind of ship or station or futuristic office. In fact, there appears to be a futuristic printer or typewriter (!) off to the right. I doubt it's a typewriter, of course, but it looks like the typewriters that were made just before they became extinct. (Along with dinosaurs.) The details back there are fascinating---something you put a lot of thought into---and they make me very curious what everything is for... But you left all that in shadow, to highlight Gorrel. (Btw, is it just me, or do most science fiction creatures, droids, non-human creatures all have names like "Gorrel"? I've rarely seen a creature called "Stu" or "Biff" or "Vlad"---short for Vladimir, but all his friends call him "Vlad". Not an important point...) Gorel is fascinating because he's so in shadow, and yet he has such sheen---and a deep yellow-green sheen. A quite striking hue. With all that sheen, it's fascinating how you portrayed him with so much chiaroscuro, where he emerges and submerges between light and shadow. I assume this takes time and thought in a 3D program. (I have no experience with 3D, so I'm always naive about the process.) He's posed in a very complex way as well: Partly facing us, partly facing another direction, caught in movement...and mostly animal-human-like, but with clear mechanically constructed parts. He has chelae-like protrusions, and a torso, legs, arms, an insect-like head: I often wonder what it's like for experts like yourselves to construct new creatures, using "parts" that you know so well from terrestrial life. There are so many possibilities. Perhaps one day we'll be able to reconstruct animal life, adding a 3d hand when needed, etc. Probably elementary musings for people like yourself...In any case, he's---or she's---beautifully constructed with lots of recessive parts, beautiful shade and highlight, and so complicatedly posed. In human portraiture, this would be a very complex painting or photograph. A very thoughtful piece. I take it that, having designed for authors, musicians, etc, you've developed a highly evolved manner in your imagery (where it's allowed by the client, of course), and you can produce complex worlds like this one whenever you wish. And I assume it's a lot of fun for someone like you, who understands creature-construction more than most. Above all, for anyone not familiar with the novel, it's beautiful to look at as an image. Very thoughtful work. I'm going to comment on some of your other pieces from this novel...
