Description

Here's an unused background image from the sci-fi novel I've been illustrating - the author wanted something on Grand Canyon scale, but sufficiently alien to not be mistaken for Earth. So this failed on both counts. However, I might just go exploring there on my own... Vue 11.5 Infinite, no post work. Craig PREVIOUS: Gorrel

Great terrain work, and very realistic vegetation dispersement...I for one would like to explore the canyon!

It is a very lovely scape. I'm thinking that if the scale of the vegetation on the far slope was smaller, the effect of a grand size for the canyon would be enhanced.

Seems like the perfect place for a small enclave of good guys living peacefully away from the drama and busy bluster of the rest of the world ... whatever world you decide this will be! :)

Sorry it didn't work for the novel, it's another of your knowing landscapes (knowing because it has many things true to geological formations here on earth). I know nothing of lighting in Vue, but your lighting is beautifully nuanced and very true to lighting over all. I love the scatter of highlights generated by all those jutting surfaces across the canyon wall. It seems like you didn't miss one surface. And the complex way it illumines the cloud edges and leaves the front-most clouds in total white. (Grabbing us immediately, and emphasizing the spatial depth of the piece, because you've drawn us forward when our natural instinct is to go backward. This is particularly effective in 3D, as it's much harder to make it convincing via paint etc.) And your composition moves very flowingly to the back, with light gracing the valley in just the right amounts. A beautiful canyon-wall and valley piece, with your usual atmospherics---even though the zoomed version isn't large, we can still feel "craig" atmosphere. With light blasting from just off frame...You use modulated light as well as any artist here, and your darks speak of light not far out of reach as well. A grand and peaceful image, Craig.
