Well it's all over...under a leaden sky, pouring with rain, the ships departed.HMS Bulwark led the way followed by HMS Edinburgh,Louise-Marie,Gen T Kosciuszko and the HMCS Iroquois. I doubt we'll see a sight like this again on the Mersey in my lifetime. It's been an amazing few days.Lots more pics and video of that 'Black Cat'

Brings tears to my eyes. I know how you feel. A very rare occurence, indeed. "Costs too much" according to PC politicos (ought to declare a little war on 'em!). Thanks for the beautiful photos. The weather in this one really fits the bill - BoA was rarely a sun-shine story. Rather, bitterly cold, stormy, rainy or snowing. Ice build-up keeping men busy chopping it away on dangerously slippery tossing decks to minimize risks of capsizing. My due respect to all those men who put up with the harsh conditions for our freedom. Thanks for the reminders, Neil. Looking foreward to more ship photos (and, no, here I also remember your aircraft photos, too)! :-)

What a moody and touching photo; there's something particularly human about a line of decommissioned/nearly-decommissioned/politically disadvantageous ships making a final journey. Images like this make me think of Colonel Tigh in the final episode of Battlestar Galactica declaring: "She broke her back, she won't jump again." There's something inherently sad in that, I guess it's because military ships (both real and imagined) are repositories of so much human drama that when they...drift away , are decommissioned, are destroyed, converted into museums or scrap, or...fishing ships, their stories and their histories go with them. This shot captures that perfectly, and the gray, overcast day is fitting. This is rather moving

Wow!

They needed a Sunderland to overfly them... honest! What a spectacle though? At least its a commemoration though... there was a time when it was for real... and who complained about the expense then?

Pretty tough to add anything more to what T-rex and Chipka said above. Great capture of the atmosphere and mood of a historical moment.

A little war???? Never EVER ask my opinion of them, any of them... Or the French Tourist Board (see the news - D-Day Anniversary) But, this is a fine image, grey skies allowing mate.. Sad but impressive.. Lara would have tears in her eyes.. Nice! Rob
