Description
A Dicky seat, Rumble seat or Mother-In-Law seat, is an upholstered exterior seat which hinges or otherwise opens out from the rear deck of a pre-World War II automobile, and seats one or more passengers. An 1899 Century Dictionary describes one as " A seat for servants in the rear of a carriage". Roadster, Coupe and Cabriolet auto body styles were offered with either a luggage compartment or a Dicky seat in the deck. Models equipped with a one were often referred to as a sport coupe or sport roadster.
Dicky seat passengers were essentially seated out in the elements, and received little or no protection from the regular passenger compartment top. Has anyone here ever ridden in one? I don't think I ever have. Please zoom.

Yes, Andrew, I have ridden in one in a 1930 Cadillac and it was wonderful! Here they called them rumble seats. I thought it was because of the increased noise and road rumble, but I could see it as good place for the mother in law, LOL! The 1930 Caddy was found by my farther's friend. It had under 100 original miles on it when the owner died. His wife paid someone to ad liubricants to the engine to preserve it, and put it up on blocks where it stayed for over 30 years. It took little to make it perfectly operational except for new paint and tires and such. It was still under 1000 miles when I rode in it and I never rode in a finer car!
