To Runswild: As I was taking photos, I asked my friend to identify the flowers & I THINK she identified this as lupine. But either she could have been wrong or I might have misremembered - so if anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

Well it is almost certainly an ornamental lupine and if not it is closely related and in the lupine family for sure. And definetly not even close to being a sage.
