Description

The dandelion is such a versatile and hearty plant; we like to think of it as a weed, and yet it provides the key ingredient for a specific sort of salad, a particular species of wine, and a way of telling if one is in love, or more specifically, if one is loved. Well, dandelion pollen does that, according to relatively contemporary folklore. Dandelions are not weeds; at least not in my book. Even if I’m driven to remove them from a particular lawn—as I don’t own a lawn, I’m free of that responsibility: it’s a responsibility that I don’t miss. A remnant of my childhood remains with me: a habit I enjoyed (and still enjoy.) If I found dandelions growing in a particular, sheltered area, I’d look after them and tend them if necessary. I made sure that they grew, got plenty of light and produced tall, full blossoms. Of course I was not so interested in the blossoms so much as the little white afros that came later. I enjoyed scattering little white fluffs of dandelion stuff, I enjoyed imaging each seed as a little colony ship, filled with the sorts of things that interstellar colony vessels would contain. I always imagined each seed going off on some one-way journey onto the shores of some distant, and soon-to-be dandelioned world. Even now, I look at those particular globes of fluff, and think of little dandelion ships buzzing with the potential of new colonies in strange, faraway places. I suspect that as an old man, I’d still harbor such quiet fantasies. I saw dandelions sprouting earlier this spring. I watched them grow. I was amazed at how completely they’d taken over an abandoned lawn. And as I walked from one place to another, I noticed morning sunlight shining through the little globes of fluff. I stopped to take pictures: two in all. This is one of them. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great weekend.

I was about to take some pictures of these Dandelions in my yard. However I got side tracked and have to do it another time. I like your story because it reminds me of when I was little. I grew up in a house with 7 women and most of them went through the stage of taking these Dandelions and seeing if their crushes loved them or not haha. Thank for sharing this.

We are such arrogant creatures. Someone once said that a weed is just a flower we do not want. I to used to blow on these puff balls and watch the children scatter to the winds. I haven't seen one of these for a while. Beautiful light. They seem to glow.

Yes, they are indeed beautiful both in their yellow outfitbut also in their fluffy robe. I love dandelions too, have always loved them and i wont stop loving them. Had alot of fun with them as a child and I enjoy them also now. I dont remove them from the lawn, but they will be cut down by the lawn mover, but it still have many places here to live. :) I actually have a shot in my upload folder. Wonderful sunny shot, Chip :)

You'd love it here, Chip; we have masses of giant dandelions all over the place, and they spread like wildfire in the spring. There are whole pieces of property that have been colonized, and go from yellow to white quite quickly.

The pic is very pretty, we used to pretend they told us the time as we blew on them & the seeds scattered we would count until the seeds had gone & that told us the time :o) As for the yellow ones I was told not to smell them as you would wet the bed :o) Love these old wives tales!!!!
