Description
The Galactic headquarter of "Futura Nostra". (ZOOOMMM!!!)
Chapter 13
Man: Welcome to this extraordinary meeting..To you dear brothers and sisters I have the joyful messages to tell you our latest achivement: Futura Nostra now controls estimated 37% of all business in our Galaxy where the human race are involved..
Loud cheering from the assembled.
Man:..thanks, but it is also mainly because of your combined efforts we got this fine result!..So all bonuses, wages and everything have been given a big lift!..
More cheering and applause.
Man: But "Futura Nostra" is a company still evolving, still growing..Our inventions, all dominating patents, labs and production abilities, our new subconscious, improved sales strategies with consumer controlling..We always giving people what they want and tell them if they forget what they want!..Latest, we have got a close coorporation with "The Yamaguzi Clan", one of the other "10"(*), so now we together control 45% of everything..I said 45% of everything!..
Loudly cheering and response.
Man: Our firm have a long and in the start, humble background, but by hard work by all its men and women, we today have an undisputed position..as number one!..
Great roaring and applause again.
Man: So, how does the future, our future looks like?..It looks very promising and very, very good!
Great roaring one more time.
Man: But you also know a winning team can never rest..We still have competition and still have to work hard. We have one goal and you all here are the chosen ones..our elite with all your gifts and devotion to our case..As our slogan says: "We want it all"..
The Assembled: ..And we want it now!!..
Man: ..And now our great chairman, grandchild of our founder, financier Trutello will say some words..
All mumbling ceased. The old man of indeterminate age looked around the men and women with his light greyish eyes and then started to talk. His voice sounded tired and monotonous but very intrusive, too.
Financier: My friends..it is a..special day today..we are gathered..here..to celebrate our..firm's great..achievements..You should..be proud..I am proud..of you..
In my..lifetime..no government..no longer say..no to "Futura Nostra"..We spread..our light..with busines..and effectivity..in all corners..of The Galaxy..Let the..rulers..be rulers..but everybody... knows money..is the true ruler..Money create..money destroys..The true..power..We evolve..the world..
The world need..us..Therefore we..need the world?..The strong survives..the weak one..drowns..a very..old truth..thanks, my children..
One man stands up: For the Financier and Futura Nostra!..
All: WE WANT IT ALL!!..WE WANT IT ALL!!..WE WANT IT ALL - AND WE WANT IT NOW!!..

Ah - just your typical board of directors meeting...... The atmosphere in the room reeks of greed..... Sadly, I think this is a portent of things to come... The empty chair was most likely (previously) occupied by someone with some semblance of a conscience.. Their security people were listening to his phone calls (where have we heard THAT before?), and decided he was a security risk. What's left of him now resides in a landfill on some forgotten planet... Absolutely superb, Johnny! You did a fantastic job on that room, and I love how you made the FN logo almost look like another infamous symbol of tyranny. Brilliant work, my friend!

Hi Johnny, Clever, adopting a symbol of fascism to characterize your image. Your use of chromatic opposites, the colors green and red, rather exposes the contrivance though, don’t you think? It is that contrivance, as offered, that undermines integrity, and spoils the story and image in my opinion. I offer the television series “Firefly,” and the movie “Serenity,” as example of the integrity required to convincingly tell the story of heroic character’s facing an overwhelming evil – but first, before we get into that, we must remove the distortion and correctly define the terms. The dictionary definition of fascism is: “a governmental system with strong centralized power, permitting no opposition or criticism, controlling all affairs of the nation (industrial, commercial, etc.), emphasizing an aggressive nationalism . . .” [The American College Dictionary, New York: Random House, 1957.] Can you offer a single example of a corporation becoming a government? I’ll settle for just one. I contrast this with the objective definition of a corporation: “A corporation is a union of human beings in a voluntary, cooperative endeavor. It exemplifies the principle of free association, which is an expression of the right to freedom.” [Leonard Peikoff, The Philosophy of Objectivism lecture series, Lecture 9.] Supporting example of this definition: An individual can negotiate with a storekeeper for a lower price, the storekeeper is free to accept his terms, or not. A corporation is a cooperative productive endeavor. It has no attributes that don’t go back to the rights of individuals, including their right of free association – which is the right to deal with one another or not, or to seek other dealings according to their choice. I offer the television series “Firefly,” and the movie “Serenity,” as example of the integrity required to convincingly tell the story of heroic character’s facing an overwhelming evil in a science fiction context. In both television series and the movie you (the viewer) know Joss Whedon’s characters are imbued with integrity because as a writer Joss never offers you a contrivance or hypocrisy. The monolithic State Mal and his crew face is evil, the evil is real and palpable, its nature and character are demonstrated with a visceral honest depiction that cannot be denied, and thus the moral and ethical choice that must be made by Mal and his crew is grounded in a reality you can apprehend. Joss Whedon never lies to you about the nature of Mal and his crew, he never evades an issue. In episode 1, ”Serenity,” Joss makes it clear that the crime Mal’s crew commits is a matter of failure to file the proper paperwork with the overbearing Alliance bureaucracy – they are guilty of “unauthorized salvage” (in other instances of “unauthorized trade in goods”) which are contrivances, a governments illicit intrusion on the activities of free men. These crimes are not the same as the looter who smashes a shop window and steals merchandise, the property and livelihood of the honest businessman, the shopkeeper. Joss Whedon’s character, Mal, would never utter the words “We want it all.” These words are simply not in his nature. Joss Whedon offers the following dialogue: Mal (to the character Patience): “Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.” – from Joss Whedon’s Firefly, episode 1, Serenity. You believe Mal’s words as the expression of a man who has offered his honest labor; the job completed is the product of his creativity and skill, no different than any product honestly offered in trade by any corporation … offered with the honest expectation that the buyer will fulfill their obligation and pay for the value received. In the scene I’ve described Mal is speaking with disdain to the disreputable character Patience, a leech who has contrived to defraud Mal of pay for his honest labor. If Joss Whedon were a 3D graphic artist, say an artist who chose to display in his avatar image a Geko lizard, or perhaps, a PoserPro logo, (as random example) Joss Whedon would never be so hypocritical as to claim he was victim to the force which produced such remarkable tools of creativity … If I were to offer the hypothetical 3D graphic artist Joss Whedon a sumptuous payment for one of his graphic works – perhaps because I like his shiny PoserPro avatar logo – Joss would never obfuscate his acceptance of hard earned payment with the deceptive term “greed.” Joss Whedon would never offer the character Patience as the epitome of moral integrity, nor demean his character Mal with the label fascist – it is not in Joss Whedon’s character to insult his viewers with smarmy contrivances and distortion. Art is only as good as the integrity of its author.
