Description

Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. The Chapel of St. Mark or Corner Chapel. The Corner Family granted the present space and construction began in 1420 by Stefano Petrizolo and Giovanni di Francesco from Cremona on the commission of Giovanni Corner who dedicated it to St. Mark in memory of his uncle Mark. It is one of the most beautiful chapels of the Basilica. At the bottom of the chapel you can see a holy water stoup. It was donated to the church by Daniele Giustiniani. The stoup was converted into a christening font by placing on top a marvellous marble statue of St. John the Baptist (1439), one of the most inspired works of Jacopo Tatti known as Sansovino. On the marble you can read the inscription: “Iacobus Sansovinus Florentinus faciebat”.
