Description
On February 21, 2012, five members of the group staged a performance on the soleas of Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Their actions were stopped by church security officials. By evening, they had turned it into a music video entitled "Punk Prayer - Mother of God, Chase Putin Away!". The women said their protest was directed at the Orthodox Church leader's support for Putin during his election campaign.
On March 3, 2012, two of the group members, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, were arrested and charged with hooliganism. A third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was arrested on March 16. Denied bail, they were held in custody until their trial began in late July. On August 17, 2012, the three members were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, and each was sentenced to two years imprisonment. Two other members of the group, who escaped arrest after February's protest, reportedly left Russia fearing persecution. On October 10, following an appeal, Samutsevich was freed on probation, her sentence suspended. The sentences of the other two women were upheld. In late October 2012, Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova were separated and sent to prison.
This isn't the upload I had intended for today, but after watching the HBO documentary on this group I felt compelled.

Very disturbing image and story. They do not have the right of protest in Russia apparently. Having the church desecrated was probably not the crime....rather the anti-Putin stuff. Were they brave or just foolish one wonders......

I have followed the case. But it is, I'm afraid, only one of the steps closer to the dictaturship Putin thru the years have worked for. :o[ From kommunism to fascism? But a very fine dedication to the brave women..He, "Big chief", must either be and idiot or totally lacking humor..

A very disturbing image, but not half as disturbing as the story of Pussy Riot and their imprisonment. It's in one line with taking away our freedom in order to 'protect' it as is done in the US, with taking away our economic base in order to 'save' it as is done in Europe, or taking away our right to be of a different opinion in order to 'create' democracy as is done in Turkey right now.

Recent low level political protesters in Russia have been rounded up and are being put on trial as well. Need to keep an eye on our liberties less we go down that road over here. The premise upon which our nation was founded is that governments will become oppressive unless checks and balances are put in place and are enforced by a vigilant public. How we doing on that i wonder?
