Description

Some people have commented on the intricate stonework of Sumula Monastery and indeed it was fantastic! All the more so because they were put in place to build a structure erected on the edge of a cliff. I wonder if they prayed to God for safety before they went out to do this work. I cannot image doing it myself. Here is a view from the path looking up the stairs I showed you in the previous image. Do you notice the subtle fining upwards of the stone size? And look at those neat, finely laid stone slabs that form the top of the staircase. And my goodness doesn't that almost give you vertigo looking up at that outside corner wall next to the door? Oh, and by the way, on the top left, that's a Roman style aqueduct, supported by the arches, bringing water from a distant spring into the monastery itself. The skill to do that... just amazing. Next image we are through that door and into the Monastery itself. Stay with me because it only gets better from here. (PS It took me three tries to get this uploaded. It kept on telling me I had exceeded my file size even though I had not. See RodS's last work for comments on this issue. By the way, I am now evidently banned from the community forum, probably for my previous rather nasty rants about the way RMP treats its customers and artists.)

This is amazing craftsmanship, and considering the tools they had to use an amazing structure. Huh, you speaking up... can't image it....LOL. Silence the voices of those who speak out and it only creates more of a din.

You would need a huge amount of money to make this purchase today, and even with money in hand, probably would not find easily an architect who dared to do.Is wonderful what our ancestors did using low-tech. Great serie, I,m going with you indoors.

The scale of this Monastery keeps getting more amazing! I can’t envisage how it looked when first completed, for me the rough stonework with plants growing between cracks is attractive but I imagine the original builders would be appalled. I’m glad you pointing out the aqueduct – I would have missed that. Fantastic capture – I like the perspective and how the roof and stair lines form a Zee!!! You should consider doing one of your single-shot HDRI version of this one ;)

Fantastic shot! I had that same issue a couple of days ago, false statement about too large file size, reuploaded right away with no problems. Strange, but when you are dealing with computers with millions of lines of operating code it is not surprising.

It never ceases to amaze me what these people did with their bare hands and a few primitive tools. This would be a challenge (if not impossible) even with today's technology. You are taking us on such a wonderful tour, Roxy - I do hope you'll continue to thrill us with photos like this. I AM getting dizzy looking at this.......wait.......I'm dizzy all the time.... :-D Sorry to hear about the forum thing; some folks just get their shorts in a wad when you shoot the truth at 'em.. I'll be back full-force very soon.

Even as a picture and looking up, it makes me giddy. Excellent picture and perspective. The layer of rocks under the slab "railings" is pretty interesting. Structures built into cliffs like this just amaze me. Especially for back then, I can only imagine what the rest looks like.

Great capture of this beautifully build monastory, Roxy!! The builders at least did notfear heigths, I hope! Uploads problems is more the rule than the other, generally it was much easier to both upload and work with text a couple a years ago. Sometimes I simply drop vendorlist because I'm not getting in and then have to find, and once again find the vendors on the list - the same list which works so porly...:o[
