Description

Needs a full size view. mtdana suggested I do a HDR of Sumela and by coincidence this next shot is an HDR of the sweeping interior of the monestary. You can see that this is indeed quite a significant village that has been built into the cliff side. I really like the bright reddish orange colors and how it contrasts with the cool colors of the land that surrounds it. To the left in the alcove is the church with chapters of the bible painted as a series of images (details to follow). In the center is the work area including a kitchen, bakery, workshop and food storage area. And to the right are the rooms for the monks. You saw that from the outside in my first picture of the series. Some of the rooms are now being rented out for overnight stays. It must be a magnificent view of the valley. You will see some of the lodging area is covered in a tan neo-modern plaster while the rest is original rock. This is part of a "restoration" that caused a big uproar because the contractor determined to modernize the look of the monestary. This is not an uncommon practice in Turkey where restoration is often done by building contractors and not archeaologists. Anyways, there was a big outcry about the job and it was stopped. But now they are stuck half way and are not sure how to take down what has been "fixed." A bit of a mess because they actually did a good job of the plaster work, it is just too bad they did it on an historically significent site!

!!!!!!! What Mike said... Me too. This is beyond words, Roxy - you are indeed blessed to have the opportunity to experience this first-hand! And what a tour you're giving the rest of us! Truly magnificent! It's a real shame they felt they had to 'modernize' the look - it should be restored and maintained, but not 'redecorated' with a modern look. Looking forward to your next one!

Wow! This makes fantasy architecture images look mundane. What a spectacular vista and excellent photo. The enhancements really bring out details. What a beautiful place. It's ashame that some are so unsympathetic to history. I would think this would be made ah historical preserved site. At least they stopped. I can imagine some contruction for safety's sake, if needed, but it would be good to keep the style of the original architecture. This is a great series for cultural sharing.

excellent image, the pov is very successful, as it provides a comprehensive view of the place. I agree with you about color. Here in my country a priest decided to restore a colonial church, and replaced the carved wooden beams with Styrofoam panels. I would die with laughter, if it was not to mourn

Excellent shot! I must admit I would be nervous there because I have seen so much falling rock in the Canadian Rockies.

Awesome capture Roxy!!! It looks like a scene from a movie, I love how the roofs on the right stack and the way the rock form an arch to shelter the buildings – amazing place. I agree with you I think the colors are phenomenal - if the image is not HDR you must have had great lighting that day! Not sure about a stay overnight - I think the place would get a little eerie at night after all the tourists were all gone! Agree with Mike!!!

Very impressive! A shame that the contractors are not educated or even accompanied by a historian.
