Description
Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette,
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death,
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hates to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette
(Merle Travis and Tex Williams)
Captured 6/19/13, early AM, about a mile from home.
I mentioned earlier that I was going to get ugly with some of my stuff.
May have been left by some impatient soul standing on the sidewalk, not wanting to be late going to the movies, waiting for his wife to come out of the house so they can get on their way. Either that, or it's the detritus deposited on the sidewalk from an auto ashtray by some uncaring blighter.
Toodles, and enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

Looks like someone needs to learn to use the trash instead of the sidewalk. Nice capture as always Harry

Three brands, Marlboro Lights, Marlboro Menthol and I'm not sure about the standard filters....this location doesn't overlook a bank or a jewelers does it, any robberies of late? There may be soon!!......sorry!! too much CSI :-)

Looks like the remains of a car ashtray. I hate these idiots who think their trash can be dumped wherever they want. It's unsightly and just plain rude! That said, excellent capture of this moronic behaviour, Harry!

one of my biggest pet peeves, cigarettes thrown on the ground first they pollute the air then the ground, how hard is it to find somewhere to throw them away. good post

Terrible indeed, garbage should be thrown in the trash and not on the floor! Great shot!

I mean..... How much F-ing effort does it take to take the ashtray out of your car and empty it into the TRASHCAN one a week? Idiots... A great commentary on the uncaring apathy that permeates our society. Keep 'em coming - art/photography doesn't always have to be pretty.

Surprised he's got a wife if he's that filthy, or maybe she's the same.

I'll be back for a more intensive session soon, but I had to comment on this before another day passed. It was great to read the comments here, because most people got understandably riled by the waste and lack of consideration of the strewn butts. Understandably so. It's great to see passion about a work of art. But I want to add that this is also a smashing piece of art. I'm actually glad I'm writing this a day late, so your other fans don't pile up on me and toss me off the site---but it's true. As Rod said, "art/photography doesn't always have to be pretty". I'd go further: As art? This IS pretty. I mean that...as an abstract collection of shapes and vectors, it's a fine, dancing piece of photography. After all (soapbox time), art transforms everything it touches, right? So why should an artist shy away from cigarette butts? Esp if they see exciting patterns and music in them? Does music only come from mountain peaks and sunrises and beautiful trees in the gold of early morning? What you post here throughout each year, what you teach, is that art is where one finds it, if the artist is doing their work. If the artist sees and processes it right, art will shine even in a pile of cigarette butts. (End of soapbox.) Full size, it's a big busy bunch having a caucus. And a bunch of them stagger in late---some in little 'mini' caucuses to the side, with beautiful yellow petals and equally beautiful red petals (or leaves) mingling here and there. A street scene---for the "strewn" set. (I'm serious here, I ain't jokin'.) The ashes add another element. And then some wonderful grooves in the concrete, adding vectors and isobars to the gathering. This is one of the essences of your work: That art is always capable of turning the lowly cigarette-butt into fascinating little "beings" who like to hang out with their friends and loiter with whoever else wanders by. And, fascinatingly, the big pile-up has butts going one way---a bit of conformity---while the colored ones give some counterpoint. Neil even identified the brands, lol: Good detective work. I love this. You stated, in the next upload, that you wanted to balance out the ugliness of the day before: I understand why you said that, you don't want fans to think they're in for a series of cigarette butts---but in its own way this is as beautiful as that breathtaking rose shot that follows this (taken by an Outback---talk about finding art anywhere!). It's as beautiful. It's how you photograph. And I'm all for it. A dancing nosy gathering, and a helluva shot! (And harry: Thanks SO much for your wonderful comment yesterday! I blushed and wondered, is he talking about MY piece? Thank you. You were most kind!) I'll be back in a few more days...

Well, mark sees it in such a different way...but I just can't get past the butts. It really is gross, but certainly a good shot of urban life.
