Description

Invite all the builders and ex-staff to a free shakedown night ( bring your own beer). A few games of Laser Quest, get full comedic value out of several miss-shaped balls, then phone AMF and demand replacements. What's she looking at?....don't tell me we have a leak!!!........ There now, that wasn't so difficult was it? The events occurred with the closure of the old Bowl on April 4th 2004. I had left 12 months earlier and was happy night driving between home and London, 5 nights a week and NO WEEKENDS...When work began, I stopped off every other morning to record progress. Rebuilding began in October and continued through the Winter, with a couple of weeks shutdown at the end of February beginning of March due to snow and ice. After that it was full steam ahead. With the impending arrival of the bowling machinery, the Techs were called in for a 'procedural interview' and to get them back on the books. They announced that as it was all new and computerised machinery, they should get a substantial pay rise, they thought £2000 a year was fair. The boss said he'd let them know...... With only the Chief Tech 'Len' on board there was now a problem.....and who turned up to take more pictures? I was asked to return on a Tuesday and was back in the Bowl the following Monday....I didn't ask for a £2000 pay rise (but I got it anyway :-) We hired Len's nephew and he got a crash course in lane maintenance and we opened on September 1st 2005, 2 weeks ahead of schedule....and the rest is a part of a very important history.......The Riverside Bowl isn't just 'another' Bowling Alley......

Marvelous series! I really like getting to see the progress from destruction through finished rebuild. Do we get the final tally on cost?

So my £4 Mil wasn't too far off then lol. The less talked about 'odd shaped balls' the better really. Well done to all involved with this build all those years ago. My only question is why is that fella in the bottom picture standing a box of beers :)

I loved this series. I have seen many bowlers so hammered they would not notice the misshapen balls. They would be fun to put put out on April 1.

THANKS a LOT, Neil. I greatly appreciated this series. And, as I suspected, you were eventually involved in the construction, and (congratulations!) did get the £2,000.- raise. Letting the builders test the equipment was a great idea - IF anything went wrong the tech support caused it and can fix it right away! It seldom occurs that way. I assume this is the place you're working at now (correct me if I'm wrong!). This has been a highly educational trip through time and construction. Thanks again! :-)
