Description

Eriocampa ovata Size 6 to 7 mm. The adult sawfly has a black head and abdomen and dark orange thorax Habitat is around Alder trees and it can be seen May to August Life History: The larvae are up to 2 cm long and covered in a white powdery substance. They camouflage themselves as bird droppings. The white powdery substance is easily rubbed off and in the final instar, when feeding is finished, the white powder is lost and the larva adopts a pale green appearance. There are two generations each year I am so pleased I managed to ID this! I have never seen one before, and it was indeed near lots of Alder.

Well done for such a detailed close-up shot. You have a great eye for spotting the opportunity and that is not as easy as it seems.

Superlative macro of the sawfly atop the beautifully textured leaf. The alder I get, the more impressed I am by your extensive knowledge of arachnids, insects, flora, lichen and fungi, Andrea.

A splendid macro and description. I wonder if you have ever considered submitting images to one publication or another dealing with insects?
