Description

In The Good Old Summertime Summer ... The word alone Conjures up picnic visions Watermelon Potato salad Hot dogs Lemonade Summer food Lingers on the mind Long after the taste has faded Like a red-checked tablecloth Gone pink in the sun Memories of summer love Dance music from the house next door Languid days Laughter in the night It's the heat you remember most Sometimes an icy beverage Is all that stands between you and Spontaneous combustion One sunny day after another Top down Beach days Firefly nights No end in sight No fireworks Or sudden explosion To draw our attention Slowly shortening days And slightly cooler nights Are the distant roll of thunder Like a warning for someone else In another place Another time Music fades Breezes cool Windows opened in June Are closed in September And the ending Creates a longing For it to all begin Again .................... The June challenge in the Writer's Gallery has been "In the Good Old Summertime." .................... Cover page done in ArtRage 2, font is Rosewood Std.

Makes me remember visiting my grandparents in Odessa, WA. walking down to the drugstore with a real Soda Fountain and slurping, oh-so-slowly a chocolate malt shake........MMMMM

The same goes for me: it's the details, the little things...but never an awareness that once we hit the longest day of the year, it's all down hill from there: what matters are the firefly nights, the cool drinks and that threat of spontaneous Human combustion. Such a July thing! oh, and then there are the fireworks. Even if there were none in my vicinity, I always remember that sulfur smell. It is as welcome and evocative as the scent of pine in winter. This is wonderfully done! So much fun to read!

Wonderful piece. It brings back pleasant memories. School's out, long sunny days with your best friend and our best girls, barbeque, and fireworks. Thanks for the memories.

If I hang all my memories of a clothesline, then this would not only be endless. You would also be extremely colorful. Some of these memories I would like to iron, and continue, or reactivate and re-experience. Others would I depend, fold and lock away, because their time is over. But they have one thing in common: they are part of my life. Your memories have awakened my memories. Your thoughts are wonderful....thanks
