Description
This is a so-called 'green shrine', that is a shrine or 'capitello' (from Latin Caput, head) at the head of three or four roads, often, but not always at the center of the crossroads. It is called 'green' because it is usually made of a tree, sacred to a pre-Christian deity, and Cristianized later with images of the Virgin Mary, Jesus or a saint. Even if it became Christian, the green shrine perfomed the same functions: protecting the passers-by from a Dangerous spirit. Here it was a red-clad dwarf named Martorello in the area of Venice and Sanguanello in the province of Padova. He was not bad, but ready to play practical jokes to the weary peasants going home after a hard work's day. This green shrine is in front of the farmer's house, and saved by the farmer's mom, who prevented the workers of the electric company to remove or destroy it to plant a cement pole for the electric line (I managed not to include in the photo). She also takes care of it.
Thanks for your kind comments.
