Description

This is the last about Motta Buffetto, and it is a slide I made for a presentation about these mounds. While the archaeologists spoke about more technical details, I had to explain what was the constant framework which connects the different legends and stories told by the locals involving the motte. Here is a kind of partial summary of these constant features, all involving a relationship with the Underworld and the supernatural. The farmers tell about people buried there after a battle, either in ancient times or with a more modern flavor (not long-forgotten heroes, but Germans and partisans during WW2, for example). Other stories speak of hidden treasures, such as a Bishop's Golden Crosier, or the Golden Grapes, etc. Some stories tell about an earl who made his peasants build the mound for some reason, to make an ice house, or to give them work in a bad year, etc. Some stories say the mound was a place where the witches made their sabbath, or that one can see the Wild Hunt (here called Diana's Hunt) passing through the sky and risks to join it. In this slide I made a moon carried by a Bronze Age Danish chariot, the famous Trundholm sun chariot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trundholm_sun_chariot) where one side is Golden (the sun) and the other is in silver (the moon). Some stories say the motta either is or hides the 'Devil's Horn', and sometimes one can see flames coming from it. I'll tell you about the fairies in the next post. Thanks for your kind comments.

First of all Sandra allow me to say thank you for being a part of lifting my spirits today. I'm going on only a couple of hours sleep and put off visiting your gallery as well as Mickey's until last so I could take it all in. If you ask me you saved the best in this series for last as I love this slide you made. You did a marvelous job of weaving all the stories together to create this presentation. I love history, and was fascinated by each story you shared.
