Description

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, as seen reflected in a modern office tower. This was taken from the square where our guided tour began & it turned out that this grand old hotel has an interesting history. It was in the process of being built when the Great Depression hit & construction was halted for 5 years & took a total of 11 years in all to complete. It was still incomplete when news arrived that there would be a royal visit from King George VI & Queen Elizabeth in 1939 to raise money for war bonds. This was the first visit to Canada by a reigning British monarch & $12 million dollars was spent in rushing to finish it on time & in grand style for the royal stay. A lavish penthouse was built for the royal couple in anticipation of their visit. Unfortunately, either there was some miscommunication or a last minute change in plans, because the King & Queen stopped at the hotel only very briefly for tea & never even made it to the penthouse that was built especially for them. But having visited their lobby & men's room, I can personally attest to the fact that it is a very elegant & luxurious old hotel fit for a king (or queen)...

It's a fine old place, but the tea is over-rated. Well ... the tea is delicious, but it's far, far too expensive! You pay for the pleasure of drinking it at the Empress Hotel. Beautiful place!

I thought it was a photo with a mosaic put on in post work. This is by far even better. A fine symettry and I admire how you got the camera just right to show no lean distortion. The story is also quite intriguing. I bet the owners were fit to be tied when they found out the Royalty were only dropping in for tea. No wonder it is so expensive, they are probably still trying to recoup the cost.

A gorgeous reflection capture and all of the Fairmont hotels are classy. Some are very old (Quebec City) but all a must stay! Excellent historical narrative!
