Description

I needed a change of pace and looked at my 1985 Alaskan adventure photos. This is my ulu knife and we were told that Eskimos used these knifes exclusively to cut blubber from whales. But this is what Wikipedia said: An ulu knife (plural is uluit) and the English translation is womans knife. It is an all-purpose knife traditionally used by Eskimo women, both Yupik and Inuit. It is utilized in applications as diverse as skinning and cleaning animals, cutting a childs hair, cutting food and, if necessary, trimming blocks of snow and ice used to build an igloo. This blade is 6 inches (15.24 cm) wide. I only still have this ulu because the Eskimo woman that sold it to me warned me to pack it in my checked bag because knives that have blades that are parallel to the handle were not legal in Canada. We changed planes in Vancouver and many ulu knives were confiscated. Thank you for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Beautiful knife! Blade has a great decoration. I wonder why Canada has that rule. I think you can make more damage with another kind of knife.

Sounds like a weird rule that some of our 'security' bozos would come up with. I have one of these knives that I found in a local garage sale. It is very old and has seen a lot of use. I knew what it was right away because of my early studies of whales and whaling, but the seller just thought it was some odd tool, so I got it for 50 cents, hee hee!

A beautiful knife with wonderful decorations. This is lovely. Great shot! Cutting a child's hair? That can be a fraught experience with sewing shears. This could be the stuff of nightmares.
