Description
This is Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The lake is situated in the valley of the ten peaks and is part of the Canadian Rockies. Wikipedia says: Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake in Banff National Park, 8.7 miles (14 km) uphill from the Village of Lake Louise also in Alberta, Canada. The lake is at an elevation of 6,183 feet (1,885 m) and has a surface area of 0.19 square miles (.5 square km). The lake is glacially fed and it reflects a distinct shade of blue. The color is due to the refraction of light off the rock dust that is the consistency of flour and not heavy enough to settle to the bottom. This rock flower is thus suspended in the water. Well, thank you Dana! And great shot! I have only been there a couple of times which is sad since it is so close to me, but life keeps intruding. It is a beautiful place and universally praised. The color is from the limestone dust, understandably, because much of those mountains are solid limestone. The color is almost always like in your photo but some smaller lakes up there, like Abraham, very rarely become calm and the dust does settle and the water color changes to a clear light green which is also very beautiful. I have only seen that twice! Though your photo is 25 years old, it still looks like that. BTW I added a note to you in tonight's upload. Funny, eh?
