Description
Captured 7/8/13, early morn, just a couple of blocks from my place.
In trying to achieve the most striking clarity when shooting this particular species, I must have taken nigh onto 50 fotos of the lilies at this nearby lily patch, using a point-and-shoot camera and a SLR, but the blooms proved to be much too ethereal and tenuous for my limited efforts. Otherwise, they came out relatively well.
Nevertheless, more to come of this esoteric species.
A ZOOM would definitely help.
Cheerio, and have a nice day.

So amazingly lovely! This one reminds me of a jellyfish in a way, graceful and ethereal. I'd most likely take a billion shots myself from all angles possible! You did well, Harry!

Well Harry, I just got in (doctors, and then legal stuff re my father's place; and when you're not a lawyer, these discussions are very thick and impenetrable). So I'll do this image now, and return in the morning for a longer session. What a beaut this is: You said, in your description, that you've taken many shots of these flowers, with point-and-shoots as well as with DSLR. And you feel you struggled with their ethereal feel and look. Well, re efforts and struggles: I think any devoted photographer will understand that---I have folders-full of views I've photographed repeatedly, and I wanted to grab them and scream "why won't you reveal your ESSENCE???" But Harry, this photo is beautiful! And your last effort with these lilies---a montage---has the feeling of flowers made of light and silk. (They're whiter, but just as beautiful.) I can see why you grapple with these, nevertheless: They have a very 'thin' and ethereal feeling, and they seem to elude the lens. (Maybe a $40,000 Hasselblad would do service to petals like this, I don't know: But I'd assume they're very difficult to handle for any camera. Because I'd assume if you accentuated one characteristic, the next one will recede; but if you emphasize the next, the first one will recede; which is why one struggles with flowers like these---a sign, btw, of devotion rather than of any failure. But as Denise says, it's like a jellyfish; as Rob says, it's almost like it shouldn't 'be' there. You caught a "made of light" feeling just right: There's enough shadow coming through the petals to suggest how fragile the flower is. And those blacks, btw, are very deep---just what this flower needs as balance for its visual thinness. The petals, on the other hand, are captured like a most delicate silk: We see detail, but it seems to want to fade from our eyes constantly---an illusory flower. The composition is like a starburst---It's beautiful, Harry. I consider this a wonderful flower capture (of a very elusive flower). I look forward to more. Oh---and you got those thin green "tentacles" clearly---the thin 'stems' coming out of the stamen? Even though they seem to emerge out of nothingness, you got their presence nevertheless. I'm glad you told us of the struggle, because it helps other photographers come to terms with similar phenomena. Still, for all your grappling, you captured the whisper and mystique of this flower beautifully. I'm gonna fav it, even if it doesn't show up in my gallery: A beautiful capture of a very difficult subject indeed...More tomorrow...
