Description

Southern Utah, Capitol Reef area. The striped, chocolate-brown rock in the foreground is called Moenkopi, and it was laid down about 240 million years ago during the Triassic. If I remember correctly, it was formed by layers of mud settling in a bog-like environment and later hardening into rock. The pretty gray and burgundy rock sitting on top of the Moenkopi is Chinle formation. Don't worry ... There won't be a test later! LOL!

Such a striking mix of geology. Sedentary rock formations always amaze me with their colors and evenly banded patterns.

Aww, you're so sedimental...and who knew photography could be so educational! Of course I won't remember anything, except who to ask next time I have a question ;p Wonderful capture, and I love the diagonal tilt to those sedimental lines, the signs of our unstable planet!

Well, I'm glad there won't be a test - I'm even having trouble pronouncing those formations.... :-D This is really cool Tara! The strata formations seem very similar to some of the recent photos from Mars.
