Description

Two FGR.Mk.2 Phantom fighters of 92 Sqn, RAF. The FGR, or F-4M and K versions were the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom as procured for the RAF and RN. By the time procurement was done, what was supposed to be a simple cost effective solution to replacing the fleet of Hawkers, Hunters, and Sea Vixens, turned into a much more complicated and expensive proposition. Some parts of the craft were to be manufactured in the UK, notably the replacement of the J-79 engine with the more powerful Rolls-Royce Spey. Of course customizing is never a simple process, and the larger Spey required an enlarged engine bay among other things. The RN's allotment of FGR's quickly dissipated as most of the procured aircraft went to the RAF. Interesting note about the Speys...they were much less the smokers than the J-79, that is until the arrival of the FGR.3 with the newer smoke reduced version of the J-79. Another interesting note that I though amusing was that during the RN carrier trial aboard the US Navy's USS Saratoga, the Spey engines ran so hot that they burnt and warped the deck pates of the Saratoga! The"Double Ugly" served with honor until the juicier venues began to go to the upstart Panavia Tornado, it's soon to be replacement. The swansong flypast was executed by 74 Sqn., on October 1, 1992, over RAF Wattisham. This is my second try with the reworked Bazze F-4...fron scoops, stabiliser pod and vanes, new ejection seats and weapon stores, reworked to M and K model looks...and of course new paint! Looks double 'double stunning' to me! Brilliant work mate, not sure on the 'weather' comments, we haven't seen a cloud of any description in weeks. However, this is historical and yes! I do recall some grey overcast back in the mid 90's :-) You've taken a brilliant model and made it even better, love the paint job...10/10++

Yes, I remember the Phantoms ion the RAF and the HUGE Spey engines! My goodness they were brutes! I remember the panic incurred as they warped you're flight decks! Ours were solid steel.. As it happens, I have just taken photos of the one at Hendon.. Thanks for this.. Rob
